I think it could result in people sitting a little longer in the deer stand. "Now that it is past legal shooting time, I have switched from deer hunting to hog hunting."

I fear too many people cannot resist shooting that huge nocturnal buck. But who is it hurting? (besides the deer)
It certainly opens the door wider for the renegade. If you obey the law it will result in more coyotes and hogs killed. Of course we will never get rid of them. So, the law abiding hunter will be fine. The renegade will have more cover to night hunt deer. The penalties will keep most people straight.
Either write things worth reading, or do things worth writing.
You see no danger in centerfire rifles at night?

Be sure of your target and what is beyond is more diffcult at night.

Good lord big timber didn't figure you for a helmet wearing pussy
Fewer laws wins every time.
I usually pick freedom over safety but have been shined twice by poachers. This law will aid more poachers than it will kill coyotes or hogs.

You mean you were shined by poachers when it was illegal to shine? And you're fighting for it to remain illegal? Haha
Well if someone really wanted to hunt deer at night they could get a suppressor and do it anyway. The penalty is waaayyy too steep considering how many deer we have. Also, there should be some type of exception for dispatching a wounded animal, as to not let it go to waste, i.e. legally shot deer, tracked til 11pm, bleeding everywhere but still evading trackers and dogs.
Sure. Poachers will poach but when legal those instances will increase. Thermal imaging and a wheat full of hogs would be fun. Hunting hogs at night is blast but this wouldn't end good for some.
The last time we saw this bill came up was close to same the time a federal game warden in Georgia was shot and killed because he looked like coyote. DNR opposed the bill and it was tabled.

The bill I passed a couple years ago was the one that allowed the hunting at night from March thru June. It required a 10 ft elevation for centerfire for safety reasons.
There is a concern over people shooting across fields from ground level at hogs running across a field. Pew Pew Pew Pew Pew Pew Pew Pew....

I know that capability would give me a chance to pick off more coyotes for sure, since the ones around here often make themselves known about 45-60 minutes after legal sunset. Fortunately, hogs are still three miles downstream and I hope they stay down there.
If you know they are poachers, call the law on them. Or get yourself a good hiding spot and shoot their lights out. Nothing skeers a poacher more than a deer that shoots back... from what I hear.
DT, in response to your first question, YES. I know I and my hunting buddies can be trusted to not shoot a deer after legal shooting time, no matter how large it might be. Not everyone in this 'sometimes Socialist State' is a bum and a poacher, contrary to what many of your political friends seem to think.

With a good IR light, it's pretty decent. Not mil spec, but I cannot, and never will, afford mil spec. Time will tell - have to zero it and take it to the woods next week to kill a hog or three.
Was gonna address this, but DT covered it with the 10 foot elevation rule. I don't think I saw that removed in the original post.
Am I mistaken, or is there NO 10 foot elevation requirement for depredation permit hunting?

Georgia has no closed season on night hunting hogs. They don't allow weapon mounted lights, but that might change... and what's to keep you from having your buddy hold the light. Any word on how many "trophy" deer they think are being taken? Bear in mind, the way their law is written, I think a thermal sight (which projects no light) would be okay, mounted on your rifle. No elevation requirement.
Texas probably has as many or more night time hog hunters as any state... they have few regs, but you DO have to notify their DNR equivalent when you will be doing the hunting. The simple act of calling a number to let them know you are doing it will possibly keep the questionable folks from doing something stupid if they know they have already let the trout troopers know.
South Carolina has a history of hating government regulation. It surprises me that so many are against a relaxation of the previous laws. We bitch for DNR to stay out of our management on one hand, then want additional oversight on this? It's a damn hog, a freakin' coyote, and a pissant armadillo. All are nuisances, and welcome any easing up on my methods of attempting to keep them in check. The concerns over the late sitter or the night hunter are, I think, over-estimated. Those people will do that anyway.
