does anyone have any tricks for keeping a wood call from sticking so bad. i think i head once, something about putting floor wax on the reed. anyone know how much validity is in that?

I don't know how well it will work on a wood call but I've always heard rain-x helps to keep acrylic calls from sticking. I'd ask someone that knows more about it before trying it though.
I would put a new cork in it before I tried anything else. While you have the reed out stand it up on a flat surface and push down lightly on the tip to see which way it bows. You always want to have the tip of the reed bowing upward. If the call just started sticking a cork will probably fix it.

its practically a brand new cork. i hunted with it once, and i dont think that i picked it up then. i've done a LITTLE bit of playin it around the house just to get used to it. ill change it out and try that though. thanks

If you smear some shit on the mouthpiece it might work, I know it will fix your chapped lips-
It may not stop the call from sticking but it will damn sure stop you from licking your lips

should i use a good solid turd, or a nice sticky muddy turd

I have to ask what you mean by sticking?
Normally folks mean freezing up due to moisture.
But there are other reasons, as Salty znut said. Plus an inverted reed or a sound channel too short, even peanuts in the channel lol.!!
When it sticks, look under the reed at the cork slot. see if you see moisture under the reed. It will show up as a darker color than the rest of the reed.
Some use rainx but it is a quick fix.
Has the call blown ok in the past?
If it is a moisture problem, the cure is to make a "runoff" so the moisture doesn't collect at the cork.
And you thought all I did was cook, huh![]()
i do mean moisture. what exactley do you mean a "runoff"???mind explaining a little

o and like i said, i havent hunted with it, but just practicing with it, after running a series or two, sometimes it will stick in the middle of a note and sometimes it wont stick until i stop and start again. but it has pretty much always done it.

like was posted above
try a new cork first..... regardless
after it sticks take it a part and look at the cork and the reed
moisture will be under the reed at the cork because it can't go no where!!
remove the cork and reed
just be fore the cork slot make a series of three small cuts "V" in shape at an angle pointing to the inside and toward the tone channel ( small hardly noticable!!!)

should look like close to this
this will allow the moisture to runoff to be blown out the exhaust
this not to be done with haste or with out thinking... you can crap up a call real quick !!!!!
best thing is to east salteines before you call !!, hehe
Bill![]()
saltines might work. haha
will the notches not change the tone/pitch of the call?

If you have a problem spitting into the call try raising your tongue to the roof of your mouth and breathing in sharply a couple of times. This will dry your mouth out somewhat. Do this in the field at the beginning of your calling sequences and it will help.

nice pro tip salty. thanks

no, but if you don't know what you are doing .........brain surgery might be better for you to learn.
Seriously, with the right tools and taking it easy it will work.
The tone board should not be notched except under the reed at the cork and just at the channel not out past the reed edge. I don't do it to all my toneboards and then only after the caller has used the call and has a moisture problem.
I mostly do the procedure to othe calls, mine don't seem to stick that much
Hey Salty, maybe you need to have a beer tasting party and teach these guys how not to spit, hehe![]()
Sometimes it can help to put a little curve in the reed. Take the reed out and slide something round like a pen or pencil across it while pressing it against your thumb. I have found that curving the reed up usually makes most of my calls sound better anyway, but it can change the way it works and sounds a bit.
