What would you rather catch a fish on?
Do you want that topwater action or do you like to hook the fish in deep water?
Which one do you think catches more fish on your average trip out??
By my talley, the nymph is the ticket!

Did you see that?
Nymphs, hands down, will catch more NC trout. That being said, there's not much better than seeing a small brown clobber a hopper imitation up on the E. fork of the Chattooga...
Likewise, I use a lot of nymphs in the mountains of SC - my favorite pattern usually being a hare's ear, often weighted. But, you are right, there's nothing like a dry fly rise. I had never even caught a trout on a dry fly until I went to Colorado and fished the Big Thompson and Rocky Mountain National Park. There, an elk hair caddis ruled, and you could load up on browns.... or put on a small royal coachman and tear up the brookies.
I haven't fished the East Fork in years. We did indeed used to tear up the browns up there. Most were relatively small (like the water) but I did pull a 19 inch brown out of a pool up there. I like the West Fork (Georgia side) a little better - up near Three Forks.

I'm an equal opportunity flyfisher. I usually fish a dropper rig on most VA rivers. I let the fish tell me which way to go. Dredging for big browns is prolly my favorite followed by spring creek fishing but the spring creek stuff can get a little too techincal and I hate tippets smaller thatn 6X

Pheasant Tail is my favorite nymph in NC.
They worked great on the Williams Fork in CO last year, too. We fished the N.C. streams with Bead Head Wooly Buggers throwing to the banks after a rain and do well. I love fishing with big flies.
That is the kinda consensus I was looking for. The problem is I fish with some boys who push dries. I do use the dropper with it, i like little soft hackle emergers, I have had alot of luck with the olive. I just find it hard to pass up so many fish looking for that 1 that will rise and take your presentation.
With the nymphs I will catch em under your feet!
I am definitley ready to relax on the riva soon... duck season is out and if I am lucky my wife will let me buy all of my fishing stuff back from the pawn shop that financed my 04-05 duck tour!
Did you see that?
I'm with Chap. I'd work the banks with BH Buggers if catching fish was my priority. Dries can be a lot of fun under the right conditions, though.

Dukmon is the coolest person on this website. We are all lucky to be associated with him, and we should ultimately strive to absorb as much knowledge from him as we can while here on earth. He wears Air Jordans offshore, drives a Landcruiser, and tells his woman how it is.
You want fries with that?

if you like to catch fish, you should like to reel in a fish with a flyrod. it is sporty.
if you have never fly-fished, you have no clue what you are talking about.
my opinion on deep sea fishing is that most of the men and women are making up for some other short-comings in their lives to need such a big boat.
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.
