We hunted from Wednesday, October 17 through Sunday morning, October 21. We drove approximately 800 miles at 30-35 mph in about a 50 square mile area scouting throughout the week. We gained access from two seperate landowners and both areas produced well for the time of year that we were there. There were ducks in almost every pothole within the areas that we had permission to hunt. We were able to hunt two fields which was great. Mallards and Geese. All other hunts were on small potholes. Ducks dropped into the potholes at first light on every hole we set up on for the mornings hunt. There were alot of Gadwalls this year. We ended up shooting Mallards, Gadwalls, Pintails, Teal, Redhead and Canadas. There was plenty of shooting to go around for everyone. The ground was wet and muddy and we got the rental truck stuck twice. That thing took a beating too. Whatever you do, dont buy a Black Trail Blazer that was a rental vehicle. We even got stopped by the police for speeding and got a warning and a stearn talking to about the penis that was drawn in the dried up dirt on the back windshield. (We had no idea that was there) It was drawn by one of our compadres. Funny now, not so much then. I shot a triple, and had a witness. Had a group of about twenty Gadwalls swing past us and I picked one out, took a shot and three fell. My buddy that was hunting with me said he was aiming at one of the birds that I hit and before he could pull the trigger, it fell along with two others. The place we stayed was a change for the better from previous years. We stayed at a fishing guides camp. It had 3 bedrooms, a garage with cleaning table and stainless sink. It also had hanging racks for drying gear. Stove, oven refridge and a grill. 100 times better than staying in the Days Inn in Devils Lake. The son of the guy we rented from is a big duck hunter and he took us on a field hunt to remember. He had all the goose and duck decoys and blinds too. The guy we rented from offerd to take us Walleye fishing and one of us went. Not me, I was there to hunt ducks. He did catch about 20 or so. This was not our best trip but I can say that we have never had a bad trip and this definitley was not our worse.
