Default Corn and bean row width

My planter is currently set up for 30" widths for corn. I'm thinking about moving it to 20" for corn and beans. What say ye?

20" rows works well for closing the canopy earlier but just remember if everything needs to go to 20". Is this just for food plots?

Just for food plots. No cultivation, I use Roundup.

I've already planted the corn, just want to keep my rows the same so I don't have to change the setup each time.

Corn will just grow taller on the 20" rows, provided you have the right nutrients in the soil.

CU, I recently read that narrow rows are better, another reason I am thinking of 20" rows.

Since you aren't harvesting knock yourself out with the 20" rows. You'll just have taller plants due to the closer spacing.

What do you use to spray your roundup?

Yep, that is what I'm going to do. It will allow me to put more seed in the ground which I need, since the damn coons seem to want to eat a lot of it.

There is a guy up around Delaware that does Wildlife Management and he has a 5 row planter that is 3-30" rows up front and 2-30" rows in back and he plants corn up front and beans in back for deer. So he winds up with corn/bean/corn/bean/corn on 15" rows.

CD brought up a good point about what you are spraying with...

What is the distance between your tractor tire center line? Row width should be a multiple of that, typically half on smaller tractors. Mine are 60". I plant 30" rows at 6" spacing. It is not prime to row plant into a tire track.

If you plant 20" rows you will have to stretch your spacing out a few inches to get the right population. So spacing would be about 7.8 inches for a 34,000 population.

Two row planter, I need to measure the tire distance, but when I looked yesterday I don't think I would be running over the rows.

Thats how my two row is set up. I plant by running tire in tire track. Have just enough room to spray with my atv.
