    Default Tree and brush clearing

We have an 80 acre tract of planted pines in Pageland that are not doing much. They were planted about 8 years ago and it has gotten so thick that the pines can't compete with all the crap growing with it. The brush is a little too big for a tractor and a bush hog and too many acres to go in with a brush cutter. I like the idea about using a skid steer with the mulching head to run between the rows, depending on if we can afford it.

I was wondering if anyone here had any helpful advice. The trees and brush that need to be cut are no bigger than 3-4" in diameter but it's pretty thick. I hate to lose the 8 years of growth we have.

If we can find something that works well, I'd like to be able to cut some roads in 30 acres we can't get to on a 115 acre piece of land we have in Prosperity as well.

A Browns Tree Mower on a tractor would do the trick if you could find someone who had one that you could borrow if not there are plenty of guys running those skid steer rigs now days

Also a chemical application paired with some careful burning might be something to look into...

Since the "junk" trees are the same size as the pines I'd be concerned with burning the pines up.
Forgot to add that we are upgrading from our '77 tractor to something a little more modern too so if there is an attachment for a ~50hp tractor then that might be an option.

That Brown rig can get it done, but who the hell wants to look backwards all day. I'd rather use a mulcher.

Herbicide and time are your friend!
If you really want to transform the 80 acres in the most effective and cost effective manner, get a forester to help you set up a herbicide application and watch everything improve before your eyes....really!

    This^^
I work that area on a daily basis. 20oz. Arsenal + 1oz. Escort @ 15 GPA over the top will give you the results you're looking for. It will also help the growth of your 8yo plantation. PM me if you have any questions. I generally release spray (2K ac.) and site prep (1K ac.) in your area annually and could lump it in with our contracts at a better price.

If you mulch it and don't have the means to maintain it you will be facing the same problem in < 3 years.

Gone South, I probably have at least 5 tracts within 20 minutes of Pageland I can take you to a site visit and show you the results from herbicide work if you're interested.

I've got access to a fuel chipper in that area if you choose to go another route other than herbicide.

Another option you may have is getting a drum chopper to run corridors through it. We did this on one of our tracts about 6 years ago and got good results

Take out some insurance on it, then hit it with some high intensity "prescribed" fire. rake it. plant it again. Use herbicide before it gets thicker than dogs hair next time. Problem solved.

Yep, that's a genius prescription right there!
