I have a 17' G3 center console with a 50 yam 2 stroke. The motor is mounted at the lowest possible postion on the transom. What are my pros and cons of raising the motor up a couple of notches. I have four postions I can use.

Pros- shallower draft, less drag => better performance.

    Cons - Cavitation.
Honey...I'll do it after the season is over.

Is the cavitation plate level with the bottom of the boat that is normally a good sarting point?

Try and inch or two below it. For each hull and each motor there will be a difference. Just keep trying different heights until you are satisfied with where it is at and then use lock nuts to fasten to the transom.
