    Default Chufa storage

I didn't get all of my chufa in this year as planned. I have about 100lbs left and I have it inside at the moment. Will it hold and be fine until next spring?

Maybe. Keep it dry and in a place where the critters can't get at it.

We have had (some) success with old seed. Germination (may) be spotty... Chufa is a "tough nut".. Good Luck. We planted ours twice this year. The Turkeys and Coons dug it up worse than I have ever seen.. what we did produce is already brown and being utilized by the birds..

They must know something we have yet to realize.. bad winter?? We have a hell of a bunch of Gobblers on the property now.. It's gonna be bloody in March.

Keep it in a cool, dry place. May lose a little germination, but I'd sure not throw it out. That stuff ain't cheap!

I have two sacks of RR Corn in the basement that was left over.

I wonder if storing it in the freezer would be better or worse?

If you have space, go for it. I freeze left over garden seed to preserve germination. It seems to work. My FIL told me about that.

100 LBs ??? Damn, you must have a hell of a freezer!! LOL!! Never had to freeze Chufas, but it does work on garden seeds as Slaya noted.

    Good Luck!!

I use left over seed a lot and don't have cold storage. The main thing I have found is to put it in a container where the bugs can't get it.

walkin cooler or freezer. heat, moisture and light will zap the germination. If you can control these, the seed will be viable for many years

Thanks boys, my 2013 Chufa went from room temperature to the chest freezer. It will go in the ground in 2014.

Plant 10 lbs on top of the soil on March 15 and 5 lbs every day after until we are both out of tags.

You boys planting chufa obviously ain't hunting where hogs are present.

Freezer or walk in good. Have stored seed in an interior closet before too which works fine.

It'll be fine. I kept a bag in my office for about 4 months laying on the floor with no bad effects.
