Plain and simple, if your looking for a duck dog there is only one decision to make. Do I want black or yellow... or that other color.

Seriously though, there is a reason they are (insert name here) retrievers. While there are exceptions to every rule, are you willing or capable of going through the tens or hundreds of dogs it may take to find one that will retrieve for you? For the average citizen the answer is no. So why waste time trying to make chicken salad out of chicken crap.

the best thing about labs is that you dont have to force fetch them...what is the deal with the choc. labs not winning anything...is it bc there are not as many of them run in trials?

There's a few chocolates that have "won". Most, however, have been bred ONLY for their color, not for brains and working.

    Here are some winning chocolates:

look up the breed Barbet. they look a lot like a doodle but in the right breeding have a more natural desire to retrieve.

Good links Alyson. That riptide line and Frank Prices kennel are as good as it gets. If I breed Nelli, Mr Price will be the first call I make.

Quick question for you force fetch fellas. Would you try the leather glove trick with this pooch?

Those doodles are really starting to aggravate the shit out of me. I would give a hell of a lot more respect to someone hunting with a full blooded poodle.

I believe I would invest in a pair of those metal, cut proof gloves before I started hold with him.

No need to be scared. As long as he is wearing his tritronics "clicker", he'll let go.

As far as the labradoodle goes, get a lab and tell her it's the short haired version.

Chris, if you breed Nelli to Roux, you BETTER let me know! One of the guys that has a full sister to Rosco is considering him, too. He just got orders this summer for assignment not too far from him...

Put him on the table, so he can't actually attack you. Or to be even safer start out on the table using an e-collar and it could be done. Same thing would go for doing a shephard or malinois. But it would also require to have one that already has a desire to retrieve.

I always wanted to try my luck with a Flat Coated Retriever. Pretty dogs but as I understand it they take a while to mature and like all non popular breeds it's hard to find a good one. I like the Gordon Setters as well but don't see them retrieving ducks.

Chris Adams had an Irish Water Spaniel in training with him that was pretty cool and a darn good worker!
