i just got back from hunting thursday, friday and this morning in the lowstate. awesome hunts on some awesome property. saw a lot of birds on all the hunts. but this morning was the best hunt by far. got in there about 6:50 to listen for birds. had one gobble right on top of us. went about 20-30 yards closer to him and set up. waited a little while and did some soft yelps. this boy gobbled back every time. about 7:30, we heard him fly down. then the crows started up, and we could hear him gobbling, walking away from us. at this point, i decided to start calling as well. w/ 2 of us calling, it turned him toward us. not 5 minutes passed, and he was right on top us, just inside the woods. then, he decides to run parallel with us and come out on the road about 100 yards down. i could see him strutting with the whitest head i've ever seen. he struts in the road for a couple minutes, then hops back in the woods, gobbling the whole time. we both start back up calling and he pops back in the road, coming right toward us. im sitting here with my gun on my shoulder, but not fully up. my plan was to wait until his head is behind a bush about 40 yards from me to get the gun up, then shoot. well, he stopped a little short of the bush, put his head up and started looking around. im thinking, uhoh, he's getting ready to run. so i threw the gun up and shot, fully expecting to see that turkey flopping on the ground. i shoot, and i see him flying away. looking back on it, i could have waited a little longer, got settled in w/ my gun, and blasted him. but thats turkey hunting. anybody else do anything so far this week?
