A man and his wife were walking their dog on the Sawmill Branch walking trail Tuesday night when both persons were shot around 08:15pm and the 54 year old wife was killed.
The hunter turned himself in the next day.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) — A newly released incident report has identified the individual involved in a deadly shooting on the Sawmill Branch Trail Tuesday night.

Kristofer Kelle McDonald, a 20 year-old was identified as the shooter, and he has been charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and involuntary manslaughter.

In addition to the charges already filed by Dorchester County, SCDNR has issued warrants for further charges against McDonald including criminal negligent use of a firearm resulting in death, criminal negligent use of a firearm resulting in great bodily harm and night hunting

According to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, the shooting occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Oct. 29.

Reportedly McDonald was illegally hunting for deer during the nighttime when he heard rustling near the canal. He fired three to four rounds from his 20-gauge shotgun at what he believed was a deer, which was actually the two victims walking their dog. McDonald fled the scene.


Upon arrival on scene, Dorchester County EMS personnel and Sheriff’s Deputies located two victims, a female and a male, suffering from gunshot wound injuries.

The female was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the male was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

According to the arrest warrant, McDonald saw the incident on the news the following day and turned himself in.

McDonald is currently housed at the Dorchester County L.C. Knight Detention Center, pending a bond hearing.
