Two 25-year-old men face multiple charges in connection with illegally shooting and killing a hooded merganser in Wyoming County late last month, the state Department of Environmental Conservation reported.

Coby W. Cox of Gainesville and Brody J. Fisher of Livonia were tracked down by DEC officer RJ Ward in connection with the incident in Gainesville on March 31.

The men admitted firing at Canada geese to Ward, but the birds flew away, the DEC said. When only the merganser remained, the men allegedly shot and killed it with a shotgun, the DEC said.

Cox and Fisher were charged with possessing a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, taking wildlife with the aid of a motor vehicle, hunting with an auto-loader capable of holding more than six rounds, hunting waterfowl out of season, hunting waterfowl without a duck stamp, failing to hunt waterfowl with non-toxic projectiles and wanton waste.
