What outfitter did you hunt with? We just went in Dec with Wide Open, and I never felt unsafe. Terry watchmacallit from Mojo was there at the same time, as was the North American Benelli representative. We were in white vans with the name of the Outfitter on the side. Completely unmistakable.
We did drive a ton but had great shooting on the redheads. The quail were plentiful but they did not like you walking without snake chaps, and that became quite clear after we killed a bruiser of a western diamond back one afternoon.
The dove hunt we went on was great. I killed well over a hundred but was lucky on my spot placement. We did not shoot the freshwater, and I would like to go back and do that. The border crossing was fine going but a Charlie Foxtrot on the return and we missed our flight out. The Federales took the opportunity to shake us down while we waited in traffic to cross. All said a great trip.

Wings out of Camden sells hunts in that area. I’ve been down and dove hunted. Great experience.

Heck of a hunt! Did you ever fell bad about shooting that many ducks just because you are used to our limits here in America? I don't think I would, but I've never been on a trip like that before either. To be clear I'm not judging, just curious. Either way looks and sounds like it was a great time.

Do these messican birds migrate through the US? Weren't we just talking about all things preservation here in the good ol' USA? I believe shorter seasons & less harvest was a topic.

Mexican are too poor to hunt. It’s $25 a box of lead shot down there. Do I feel bad about shooting all those ducks nope. You were giving two flats of shells per blind. My group never shot more than 9 boxes some blinds did. They also killed more than a 100 plus ducks. Yes these ducks are coming from the US. If Mexico had as many duck hunters as the US then it would be a problem. We got in the blinds about 8 to 8:30 and shot til lunch time. We could have shot ducks all day. We would get to our blind and flush a few hundred ducks off of it that was the pond hunts. But the bay hunt was the best. We could have killed a few hundred ducks but we stop at 80. We killed every type but Mallards and wood ducks. Would I do it again you bet your sweet ass. I would like to get on a red head hunt they have to come to fresh water. Some groups killed a hundred red heads. I killed one and a bunch of cinnamon teal died one morning. It’s a trip worth going on. My cost was 5150 for 4 days hunting and I didn’t hunt ducks one day. No extra cost for dove or quail hunting just had to pay for shells. That price I gave included hunt food drinks tip lodging transportation and airfare. We have book next year already at Ruben Hunts. The cartel is not messing with you either. They just look out for police.

These birds have already made it from Canada thru the US. No one hunts in Mexico but US citizens we did kill a turkey a bunch of comm rants a pink spoonbill and a group shot some pelicans which all were legal to shoot. I didn’t shoot anything like that but a few little quail killers.

I talked to one of Rueben's family members about the late times on hunting Laguna, the large marsh. It was their way of conserving. I didn't kill one cinnamon.. wish I did.

It was one of their redheads holes, desalting fresh water holes that I put my gun down. I could shoot bank to bank, lead #6s, with an unplugged beretta. A veritable tornado of redheads would come through, like you could feel them.. I'm a pretty good wingshot, no doubts in my skills whatsoever.. I killed 5 on the first pass, reloaded, they banked, and came right back through.. then shot 5 more. It went on for a little while, like there's no way to explain it unless someone has seen it. I was trying to grab birds and throw them on the bank, and they were locked up landing all over me. It didn't take long for me to just sit back and watch.. I wanted to remember it because I don't think I'd ever see anything like it again. And yeah, I wasn't trying to be overly poetic.. but I filled a void that morning and put my gun down.

I never saw the red heads like that but I heard what it sounded like. That bay hunt I will never forget. I watch a lot and remember what Santee used to be in the late 70s and early 80s were like. I would just sit back and watch them work. We had black ducks land on the mud at 30 yards and just watch them. The grey duck are really a sight to watch when there are about a 100 of them coming into the decoys. It just made me feel young again.

Thank you. Always found it odd listening to people talk about conservation here in one breath and in the next talk about their trip to Mexico.

I have friends that hunt there every year, that's the only ducks they go after now. Wings, Don and those guys go to a few places. Probably like Jacob and his crowd. I don't have it in me to do that.. hunt down there year in and out. The most fun I had down there was on a small river, and working birds, maybe killing a dozen. Not every hunt is a barn burner, at least when I went. I was just as entertained shooting doves, killing good numbers.. but nothing like Argentina doves. I also know guys that hunt doves down there every year, and some that go every few years. I have no desire to shoot doves down there. Killing a hundred birds in an afternoon is way more then enough for me, hell forty to fifty is honestly.

When I went with Rueben, it was 1995, 96, and 97. Of all those trips, the least number of ducks that I killed in a single morning hunt was 27. The most was one morning that me and my FIL were on different ponds and the 2 of us killed 191 in 3 hours. I did not feel guilty at all. We also killed the hen and drake of 13 different species of ducks. And we brought those home. Back in those days, it was awesome. I doubt it's done the same now, but those types of hunts were the norm back then.

    I'm sorry...I got the dates wrong. I hunted Alaska 1995, 96, and 97. Mexico was 1998, 99, and 2000.

I’ve only been to Mexico once about 10 or 11 years ago, hunted out of Mazatlan. It was a fun trip, killed some birds, fished off shore, wife went and hung out on the beach, ate good food and stayed at a resort. Haven’t been to Argentina in a few years but send a bunch of ppl down there. I don’t care about shooting dove in numbers like that anymore, I’ve seen six figures of birds killed down there over my life, but I do recommend every wing shooter does it once, it’s worth it. Duck hunting is incredible as well, doesn’t mess with anything in the US, and hardly any Argentinians hunt ducks.

Next trip I’m working on is a quail hunt in Mexico. Driving, hauling my dogs, staying at a hole in the wall ranch, and freelancing. Just gotta avoid the lions, rattlesnakes, and javelina.

I think everyone should experience high volume shooting at least once. The luster wears off if you do it a lot, but it’s a legit bucket list item that usually lives up to peoples expectations.

When I first started hunting Mexico there was one outfitter in the area. I never saw another boat or group of hunters on the water. There is now 6. I fear the area will never be the same moving forward. Internet advertising and social media are causing the same thing to happen in Mexico as our favorite spots in the United States. It's no longer a guarantee. I have come down here in recent years and had bad hunts only killing a couple in a session. This year there were more ducks in the area than the last two however there are more hunters too.
