Default Texas deer hunting- info requested

I was fortunate as a teenager to get to hunt South Texas a few times. Back then, it was set up as a traditional outfitted hunt- you pay a set fee for a hunt and you hope to kill a nice animal. I'd like to take my son to South Texas just to see the abundance of wildlife and maybe get a crack at a nice buck. However, in doing some research, it looks like most hunts are on a sliding scale where you pay x for a hunt and then additional money based on the buck's score. That does not interest me in any way. We're also not interested in hunting high fenced put-and-take operations with genetic manipulation. Just want a traditional Texas ranch that's not pay-scaled. Does anyone have experience or a lead on a South Texas ranch that does it the old way? Thanks, CC

Wouldn't be opposed to looking into it. Do you have any info you can share?

I seriously doubt you’ll find a low fence deer operation in south Texas. It’s wild to hear them talk about “feral” animals not inside a high fence. They view every hooved animal as livestock and should be kept in that plot of land

In my opinion, if you are only going once, the King Ranch offers the best value . They offer deer from the 100"-130" class and up in graduated scale by 10" increments.

Hogs, Javelina, Nilgai, predators, fishing , Waterfowl, doves, quail hunts can all be arranged and packaged.

Wonderful, historic place and over 800,000 acres in one tract. Lodging and food are top notch.

I am not aware of any traditional style hunts in TX. I know you dont want high fence but you could look at one of their management buck programs where you shoot a management buck and many of them are decent bucks that most would be proud of.

Thanks for the input. I suppose it's capitalism at its finest. I did find a low fence operation without a non-graduated scale, but it's $11K for a trophy, which I'm simply not paying.

I'd go King Ranch and add a nilgai hunt. That's on my personal short list.

Nilgai is damn fine food as a side bonus. I rank it up there with Axis deer.

King Ranch is a rare place in that you can drive a long time on the ranch without leaving the property.

That's 90% of the reason I want to hunt one, the meat. I don't think they're particularly good looking animals.

It's $5200 for a guided Turkey hunt. Glad I went when the birds were $300 a piece.

It is one incredible, historic place. Worth the price of admission I say. You can't find another place like it in the US.

Check out S.Texas Low Fence Hunting group on Facebook. There are a few ranches that still have DYI style hunts that are well organized. Google DYI low fence Texas deer hunt. The King Ranch would be damn good time and we'll worth the money.
