Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.
You needed a None of the Above because none of your answers are correct...
A yearling can be a buck or doe that was born the previous year...
roger...but born the previous year?
cut em and i were having this discussion the other day. interesting how certain parts of the state....or just dog hunters....call things differently.
kinda like log deck vs log dock. what the hell is a log dock?
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.
well then...why is everyone saying its a fawn without spots?
to me...a yearling is a 1.5 yr old. just wanted some opinions. sorry for the confusion.

Around here a fawn has spots. A small deer without spots is a small deer. A yearling is a deer around a year old. It may be younger, it may be older.
This was actually discussed at the Southeastern Deer Study Group annual meeting!
The results:
Fawn - birth to 1 ( it is a fawn)
Yearling - 1 to 2 (This is an imature deer)
Adult - 2 plus ( mature deer)
Either sex
Records are kept on all 3 categories in most cases!

I've always called a 1½ year old deer a "yearling". This year's deer is a fawn. Yearling bucks usually stay with their momma until the fall rut.

The best piece of deer hunting/yearling advice i ever got... If you see an average size SOLO slickhead DON'T SHOOT-- better than average chances it is a button buck that got run off.
I agree on the yearling being last years deer- although having newborn fawns in late Feb and deer still wearing spots the last day of deer season it ain't always easy to tell if a deer is this years or last...

Worst mistake I've every made hunting was to shoot a 10-point yearling (year-and-a-half old). I can only imagine how he would have looked at 4½ years old.
