well the fish ive been looking for for 7 years finally gave me a shot saturday night in our clubs biggest tournament of the year. we shot a 52 pounder which was a pound off of my biggest ever at about 11pm... we were damn proud of that one and had high hopes in the tournament. ive only killed a hand full of blues over 40lbs over the last 7 years and only one over 50, so to shoot a 52 pounder in a tournament was just awesome..... well not 20 minutes later i spotted a good sized blue on the other side of the boat...looked to be 35-40lbs. i point him out to my partner and he shoots and misses. the fish took off and i slung a hail mary at him just as he got to the edge of the lights and connected. he spooled my reel within 15 seconds as i get the boat in gear going towards him. i finally caught up with him and my partner backs me up with another arrow. he jumps down and gaffs him and somehow pulls him into the boat.... thats when we realized that he was a little bigger than 35-40lbs. we high fived, and war whooped a few times, and threw him into the cooler with the other 52 pounder....we knew we had two good fish, but just had no clue how big they really were. we had our two 36+ inch blues so we spent the next hour or so getting 8 more under 36" blues to go with them and then went off to find some carp and a few flatheads.....
we got back to tournament weigh in at 7am sunday morning and couldnt wait to see what we had... i was amazed when the big one ended up weighing 65.35 on certified scales.... smaller of the two went just over 52. ended up weighing in 423 pounds for our big20 weight with 10 blue cats, 8 common carp, and 2 flatheads.
hundreds of hours on the water to get an opportunity at a fish like that... but to be able to do it in the biggest money tournament of the year is just amazing.... ill never forget this fish or this tournament.
