    Default Duck dog alternatives

What are some other breeds that you folks have hunted over? Something besides labs, chessies, boykins, etc. I saw a guy at the ramp once in college with a huge Rott that the owner claimed was a great retriever.

Poodles. They aren't hardy enough to stand in cold water, otherwise they can do well if trained properly. An excellent house dog as well. American Water Spaniels and Irish Water Spaniels are two other options.

I know a man that hunts upland birds with his, and dry field ducks.

    Damn smart dogs.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

i've thought about getting a weimaraner. good lookin' dog and supposed to be a helluva retriever.

    From WIKI:

The Weimaraner (/ˈvaɪmərɑːnər/VY-mə-rah-nər) is a dog that was originally bred for hunting in the early 19th century. Early Weimaraners were used by royalty for hunting large game such as boar, bear, and deer. As the popularity of large game hunting began to decline, Weimaraners were used for hunting smaller animals like fowl, rabbits, and foxes. Weimaraners are great water dogs as evidenced by their webbed toes.

Every WM I've ever seen is like a hyperactive, hardheaded, disobedient GSP on crack. Beautiful dogs but nothing I'd really want to keep around.

You REALLY have to do your homework if you're looking for a hunting weim.

I've got a springer who has made a really good meat dog. And I've seen a guy use an Australian Cattle Dog(basically a heeler with a tail) for all of his bird hunting. Lots of GSPs, Brittanies, and a few GWPs out here. Got a friend that uses his Llewellin for quail, doves, and jump shooting ducks.
Man and other animals were first vegetarians; then Noah and his sons were given permission to eat meat: “every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you” Genesis 9:3

I'm torn between a springer and a lab for my first dog. I've always had labs growing up but theres something about a springer that gets me.

I feel like labs just get "it", whether "it" be hunting or family.
