    Default Computer Geeks

Any of you boys on here know how to "clean up" a computer. Man my computer is running slow? Got it from my boss. Let me know your rate.

Best way is to reformat it and just start over. That might be a little complicated for the novice user though.

Restore it to factory settings by wiping and reinstalling OS, much easier and cost effective.

Reinstall windows from scratch with a formatted drive. Go ahead and check the drive for errors first. Install office software of your choice. Install antivirus and malware blockers. Then hook it up to the internet and down load windows patches for the next two days. Decide what web browser you want to use and install script blocker and pop-up blocker before watching

Check how much memory it has and add some if appropriate. Memory is relatively cheap compared to its benefits.

    I'm in the columbia area.

Common sense is not a gift. It's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone else who doesn't have it.

Sounds like good advice. I know nothing about computers so I'm in the dark. I'm in Irmo area. The only other issue is I don't have any of the discs for Microsoft office or Windows. What do I do?

If you just want to do general maintenance I'd first use the search function in the start menu and delete all the useless files with these extensions .TEMP/TMP, .BAK, .CHK, .DIZ, .1ST, .ME and .NFO. Then run empty the trashcan and reboot. Then run scandisk and then defrag the drive. Now go back and using the search feature delete any new .CHK files that were created when you ran scandisk.

You can also delete any files with three digit extensions such as .001, .111 or with .log, and others but you'd be there all day.

You really should do this regularly, you can set your computer up to auto run some of this stuff when you aren't using it. I "try" to do it at least once a month.

Mergie you have to do all that because you went to the end of the internet and beyond one day.
