    Default Streamlining

    So...

My new office is hooked up and rolling.

I have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many cords and such. Filling up two surge suppressors in the same outlet.

I want to pare it down. Here is what I have, and what my thoughts are:

    Flat screen monitor.
    desktop computer
    surround sound
    cable modem
    wireless router
    printer
old time (not flat screen) box tv
    dvd
    wii

I want to know, can I operate my dvd's from my wii or computer?
If I remove my box tv, can I do my computering/dvd/wii from a flat screen?

Is there a cable modem that is also a wireless router?

What kind of cost are we talking to get everything streamlined? I plan on purchasing a new flat screen in the next month or so.

If I remove my box tv, can I do my computering/dvd/wii from a flat screen? Yes you just need to get the cable that goes from the back of your desktop that fits in the side or back of your new flat screen.

Is there a cable modem that is also a wireless router? Yes http://www.staples.com/Netgear-Wirel...product_865920 $100

What kind of cost are we talking to get everything streamlined? I plan on purchasing a new flat screen in the next month or so. Cost of flat screen plus a few extra cables to go from back of desktop to flat screen.

Basically the cost of the flat screen and about $150 for cables and modem you should be streamlined.
Shouldnt be that difficult or in your case that expensive.

Im not sure about time warner or anything like that. I had At&t and bought my own modem/router. Just one less thing they would bill me for each month and if I got tired of their service I could swap services and keep the modem/router.

You can also buy one for yourself and not have to pay the monthly rent on one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825122014

Wii will play DVD. You have to use the wiimote for navigation.

Otherwise, there's not much you can do.

Look at getting yourself a wireless keyboard and a (trackball) mouse that way you can sit in your Lazy Boy and surf the web or do your computering as you call it.

Oops.. You're right. Mine is modded so it plays them. Unmodded Wii's will not.

Here, they charge for the wireless cable modem, but all the units they install are actually wireless, the tech just needs to turn it on and then they charge you for it. I talked the guy that installed mine into turning it on for no charge.

Are you on a Business Class contract with TW? I'm not sure if anything has changed since I worked there but I do know TWC has modems with wireless built in, just can't remember if they charge extra for it or not. But I do know its extra for home ISP users.

Or like Bub said, you can buy your own cable modem with wireless built in. I'm almost postitive you don't pay for modem rental, unless something has changed. But if you go that route and have a problem, they can't support it. Whereas if you just use theirs, if the modem gets hit by lightning, takes a dump, or just whatever, they'll just bring a new one out ASAP. They get their panties in a huge wad when Bus. Class customer has problems. Bus. Class customers pay more, so they should get better service IMO.

BTW, I know wireless is convenient for temporarily bringing a laptop in and connecting but for everyday use, wireless a good idea, until it doesn't work leaving you with no connectivity. I always recommend a wired connection to the router or patch panel depending on how many pcs you have in the office, and use wireless as a backup and a hotspot for any associate that may come in a for a meeting, or what have you.

Yea. I wasn't sure if TWC charges modem rentals or not. I know Charter does for residental customers, so I assumed TWC did as well. I've never used TWC or Charter Business class.

Like I said, unless they changed it. I could be wrong. I quit working there in '07 after about 6 years with em.

Best money I've ever spent. I recommend Logitech, I'm running the MK320.

I'm in the same boat with way too many wires but I haven't found a decent solution without spending an arm and leg. I've found for most things electronic you get better service from a wired connection.
