    Default "Best/Cheapest" Flat Screen TV

I need to buy a new LCD/LED Flat Screen TV for my FIL who is being admitted to the Richard Campbell VA Nursing Home this Thursday. The patients provide their own TV ~ 19" to 26" ~ and wall bracket, they hook it up and the cable is included in the total rate.

What brands are the best for the money? I've got a Sony Bravia 26" around the house here, but the FIL didn't like it because the 'Closed Caption' font is hard to read. The darn thing also cost twice what they're going for now.

What lower cost brand can I count on for clear picture, good sound (via hearing aids) and easy-to-read 'Closed Caption' print?

    And LED or LCD?

Just looking to tap the brain trust here before I spend my time up at Sam's or Best Buy, etc.

    Thanks!

My wife brought an "Insignia" along with her after the wedding.

It's what we have in the bedroom. It's got a great picture and is cheap as shit. It also has a built in DVD player.

I'm impressed with it for sure.

Insignia makes a good TV. It's Best Buy's house brand and the tv's are produced in LG factories.

    www.ecost.com

I have bought 3 "refurbished" TVs from there with great results.

Great info, guys. I'll run up to Best Buy and take a look at the Insignia's along with the Sharps, etc. I'm going to try to find an LED-lit one due to the lighting issues in the rooms, but the closed captioning fonts are probably equally or more important.

The VA said "16 to 26 inches", so the 26" is the limit due to the mounting on the wall (like in the hospital).

    Thanks!

Just to close out this thread, I ended up purchasing a Samsung 26" LED TV from Best Buy for $289.99... ($10 discount for floor display that wasn't supposed to be sold yet)

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+...=1218353450168

The key issue that won me over the Insignia 24" or the LG 26" was that the picture quality was basically the same for all three, but the Samsung 'Closed Caption' print box is placed only about 1" or so below the top of the screen, whereas the LG was 2"+ and the Insignia was close to 4". Why anyone would place this caption box in the upper third of the picture makes no sense to me, but none of them were adjustable for placement, so I chose the one that allowed the most picture to show since I know my FIL will keep the CC on all the time.

    Hope this info helps someone.

    Thanks.

I bought a wall bracket from eBay for under $30 for my TV that size and hung it last weekend and it was perfect. http://www.ebay.com/itm/150738705882...84.m1497.l2649

you may wish to consider the IR headphones for him as well. they are not very expensive and will give him the sensation of good hearing again. best of luck to you and your family, my father spent a bit of time in the VA hospital prior to his passing last year. MG

    Maggie,

If I'd had more notice I would have bought it at ebay's much cheaper price, but basically I needed to buy the stuff on Wednesday for Thursday AM delivery as I didn't want to string things out.

What head phones can be worn over hearing aids? Don't they create that squealing sound when put on, like when you cup your hand over an aid to see if the battery is working, etc?

I did not necessarily mean with the hearing aide in but in the place of the hearing aide. My mother in law cant wait to take her hearing aides out each night and needs the TV at high volume to hear, i thought this would be a good alternative for him. Most come with some sort of headphones but earbuds can be substituted or they have powered speakers they can put bedside (think like a hospital.) MG

Gotcha. I'll have to take a look at them and talk to him. The room is basically like a hospital room, so we'll see.

    Thanks.
