    HUNTERS' FINES DIVERTED TO CRIME FIGHTING

    PETERBOROUGH - Ten hunters who used bait to lure migrating ducks have been fined $31,000, with $26,000 of it going to the Sir Sanford Fleming Natural Resources Law Enforcement program in Lindsay. As part of a plea bargain agreement, the money will be used by enforcement students to study and develop techniques to detect and prevent illegal waterfowl hunting practices.

    Court heard that on September 27, 2003, Ministry of Natural Resources Bancroft and Peterborough Districts conservation officers caught the 10 men illegally hunting over baited ponds in Harvey Township.

    On October 21, 2004, Derek J. Stone, 27, and Justin R. Stone, 24, of Newcastle, pleaded guilty to placing bait and hunting within 400 metres of a baited area. Both were fined $2,500.

    Five co-accused previously pleaded guilty on October 4, 2004, in Peterborough Court:

    Terrance Fawcett, 49, and Mark Fawcett, 26, of Buckhorn, pleaded guilty to placing bait, hunting within 400 metres of a baited area, hunting migratory birds with a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells and using toxic lead shot. Both were fined $4,500 and forfeited their shotguns to the Crown.
    Jaymes W. Bolton, 24, of Lakefield, pleaded guilty to hunting within 400 metres of a baited area, hunting migratory birds with a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells, using toxic lead shot and hunting migratory birds without a small game licence. He was fined $4,500 and his shotgun forfeited to the Crown.
    Christopher Ryan Woodward, 26, of Buckhorn, pleaded guilty to placing bait, hunting within 400 metres of a baited area and using toxic lead shot. He was fined $3,500.
    John D. Fitzsimmons, 56, of Mississauga, pleaded guilty to hunting within 400 metres of a baited area and using toxic lead shot and was fined $2,500.
    Three additional co-accused also pleaded guilty on February 19, 2004:

    Bradley McFadden, 27, of Lakefield, pleaded guilty to placing bait and hunting within 400 metres of a baited area. He was fined $2,500.
    Christopher Ellis, 27, of Coldwater, pleaded guilty to hunting within 400 metres of a baited area and possessing toxic lead shot. He was fined $2,500.
    Steven Morgan, 41, of Lakefield, pleaded guilty to hunting within 400 metres of a baited area and was fined $1,500.
    Justice of the Peace Mike O'Toole heard the end of these cases in the Ontario Court of Justice, Peterborough on October 21, 2004.

    The public is encouraged to help protect its natural resources by reporting violations to the local ministry office or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

    That'd be 1312.336 feet/437.4453 yards. BTW the crown refers to the government not the Queen.
