A recent attempt by certain SC Senators and the Governor of South Carolina(the guy who appointed one of the largest developers in Horry County to head the SCPRT) to make the SCDNR a part of the Governors cabinet was defeated last week by the full SC Senate.

This is a victory for SC's Natural Resources. This move would have placed all the at-will employees of the SCDNR at risk every time the Governor changed. It would have eliminated the DNR Board and the advisory panels. This was extremely dangerous legislation.

A special thanks to the SC Senate!

I see your point but also feel the legislature isn't very responsive to DNR input in many situations and feel like atleast I could hold the governor accountable for mismanagement with my vote. Legislature is to blame but is hardly held accountable with many of our natural resource issues. DNR is afraid to speak out because certain legislators aren't going anywhere. The net effect may be the best....I don't know. BUT, I think there may have been some positives if this change would have happened.

I see your point but the fact of dealing with the legislature would not change - they would still control the purse strings so now you would answer to 2 higher powers and that is always a bad thing when they do not see eye to eye.

Cabinet positions are a good thing when dealing with agencies that are not involved in long range planning, projects, funding, etc. I deal with several different states and their forms of government. I have seen countless projects that millions upon millions of dollars have been spent only to be abandoned or delayed due to a change in Governors. Most are due to political backlash or payback. You would never run a private business like this so why would you allow your tax dollars to be misused and abused like this?

Im just glad Sanford got beat by somebody. I wonder if the Rupublicans will allow someone to run against him in a primary this year? That would be great.
