I have heard that the Army Corp of Engineers is considering turning over the buffer land around the Savannah River lakes to the landowners. Just wondering if anyone else has caught wind of this. I really would hate to see that happen. Then there'll be houses 25 ft off the water, then distance restrictions, then nowhere to hunt because of development as has happened on Greenwood. It's not like finding ducks in a huntable spot is a cake walk as it stands. But, if there's money in it for somebody, I'm sure it'll happen.

I haven't heard anything of this yet. I do know that if they do try it I'm not taking it quietly

That is news to me as well. Hard for me to beleive that the corps is just going to hand over anything! They like having the little bit of authority that they have!

That land used to be National Forest land then some senator, seems like it was Dennis? got it taken out and sold for the Savannah Lakes development. If I remember right the senator's brother ended up being one of the developers.

I assume the land the Corp is talking about is the 100' from the lake edge inland which is in effect part of the yard of the homes built there. The Corp keeps 100' inland of the shoreline so that if they have to manipulate water levels they can't get sued for damage by land owners.

My numbers may be off but I think it's 100'.

Most of the buffer is at the high water mark. It could vary in depth depending on the terrain. Some places it might be 50' and others 200'.
