I read duckcommander727's question about an impoundment. I am wanting to do the same thing. I have no idea how the property is classified (wetlands or just woodlands). Who would I talk to to find out. Once I know how it is classified who do I talk to then? The NRCS office? I am completely clueless on this one. If somebody could point me in the right direction it would help alot.

This won't give you the definitive answer but it will help you figure out where they might be.

    Wetland Digital Data

You will likely have to hire a certified wetland specialist and then get the area he delineates surveyed. I think DHEC takes the point on this kind of stuff and they consult with OCRM and Army Corp of Engineers. At least that's the way it works when the pond will be mined (which means the dirt will be removed from the property.)

    Back 40 -

You will need to get the wetlands delineated (if you have them), have the wetline certified by the USCOE and if you are going to excavate, fill, disturb, etc. you may have to get a permit from the USCOE. If you are in a coastal county, OCRM (part of SCDHEC) will be involved.

I will PM you some contact info if you have any more questions.
