At what point do you shoot the nanny?

I just can't bring myself to it. Had plenty of opportunities this year.

    What's yalls opinion.

I haven't shot any does yet for the same reason. Each has had at least 1 fawn. That is gonna change Friday. If fawns are browsing then they should be weened. All fawns I have seen so far have been eating with the does. None have attempted to nurse.

I watched a doe and two yearlings at about 7 steps when I was in college.

I, like you, didn't have the heart to shoot mama doe until....

One of the yearlings fed closer and closer to mama. The yearling tried to nurse and got a kick to the dome piece. That was a mama mistake.

I let the air out of her lungs not 20 sec later. In my opinion, she had weened them and they no longer needed her. It may have been a mistake, but it was a tell tale sign for me.

all my sits this year, with one exception, i have seem does with one or two yearlings. Weaned or not, it just seems like the young ones need her to keep them out of danger, so I don't shoot. Not hating on anyone that shoots, I just have a soft spot for younguns. But a few more weeks of not seeing any shooter bucks and my perspective may change and by a few weeks, i mean tomorrow morning

Haven't shot any with little ones with them. I have shot 3 that didn't. Her fault, she should have brought the kids.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I don't shoot does with younguns. Fucked up and did it one time, the little one bawled and bawled. Won't make that mistake again.

i've done it before, usually it's in november or december. fawns were always browsing well away from the doe and it's usually a big ass doe. no fawn has ever stuck around and "bawled"

Killed a big sow one morning duck hunting and had to dispatch her piglets with a boat paddle, that was fun.

If i waited this year to see a doe without a yearling, my freezer wouldnt have any meat in it yet. The spots are gone, mama is dry, shoot her between the eyes...little one runs away...that has been my experience.

It's called dispersal and studies have shown that does will force yearling bucks to leave her territory to prevent inbreeding.

Thats all Im seeing, none without yearlings. I dont like to shoot them with yearlings right now but will later on if I havent killed any. I still have a few does with yearlings that have spots. The spots are faint but still there.
I'm like a duck: calm above the water, and paddling like hell underneath....

Question: are deer in their first fall (ie- born the spring of the same year) termed "fawns" or "yearlings"? Are the terms synonymous?
