Is it time to start pouring the 17-17-17 to the oak trees yet?

Watched a program by Clemson Forestry the other night that suggested the 17-17-17 after the last threat of frost through mid-May in SC for all species of oak. They said to start 3' from the base of the tree and go 1 1/2 times the distance to the drip line especially for white oaks. If the drip line is 30' from the base then you need to go out 45' from the base with broadcast fertilizer.

Cool, I've always fertilized mid-February, read somewhere years ago that was the best time for this area. Haven't had any problems, and when the trees start to "wake up", the food's waiting on them.
