    Very nice.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Awesome stuff Stripa...how bout a story? Did your endurance come into play? I think I know the answer, but did your guide ask you to slow down?

Thanks guys. I was on the road all night but still can't sleep. Too much adrenaline still I guess.
Art...I didn't have a guide so he never commented on my speed. This hunt was less demanding physically than my previous elk hunts which were in higher and steeper country. However, when the packing job began, yes, I was appreciative of my approach to physical conditioning. It was the equivalent of a four hour WOD imho.
BigTimber...not sure what you mean but this was a public land non outfitted hunt. Not what I consider high end but the gas bill was a bit steep!
I started applying for a WY elk tag about seven years ago. WY is a preference point state, so each year, your odds of drawing a tag get a little better. Some tags in WY you may never draw due to demand and others could be drawn in a year or two. I'd researched this stuff hard over the years and finally decided on a few units that were good quality but still attainable.
Like everything, there are pros and cons with any choice. Based on my research, the big bennies for this unit were good elk population, some good bulls, having some contacts in the area that could give me some advice and help me out of any jams I might find myself in. Cons...proximity to private land and sanctuary for the elk from public hunting pressure and openness of terrain (rifle hunters paradise but tough for stickbow close encounters.)

After almost 30 hours in the truck, this is what we saw when we finally reached our hunting area. Not quite like any "elk country" I'd ever seen.

I'm more used to this kind of country when I think "elk hunt."

Skrimple...good stories are like smoking fine cigars, drinking good whiskey, making love, praying....not to be done too fast if you want them to be worth doing at all.

I've mentioned "we" a time or two. I was fortunate to have one of my best friends and hunting buddies join me for this trip. I'd always assumed this would be a solo effort but my bud decided he wanted to experience a western big game hunt and the timing seemed to work out. What a blessing it turned out to be.

We were a bit concerned that my unit had been mixed up with an antelope draw or something but literally within minutes of truly looking the country over, we started see those bushes way out on the horizon moving around a bit. Holy smokes, those ain't bushes!

We spent the first afternoon glassing elk and orienting ourselves with the layout of the country AND more importantly, learning where the property lines were. Wyoming is a checkerboard when it comes to ownership. You literally have small squares of private land surrounded by public land and public surrounded by (gate locked) private. One of my contacts told me to get a chip for my GPS with the property labels and it proved to be some of the best advice I received. We didn't see any other elk hunters that afternoon and glassed probably 3 different herds of 50 or so elk that were on public ground. We knew where we'd be in the morning.
