I know you meant that to be a joke but from some things I've read and talk I've heard, cougar is considered a real delicacy. And I ain't joking. I've never tried it myself so this is totally hear-say.Originally posted by TKB:

Anyone else ever heard this?

And a warning from the CDC - Outbreak of Trichinellosis Associated with Eating Cougar Jerkyfrom personal experience eating cougar meat, it does shine. It's called mtn. pork. It's a white meat with the same texture and flavor as pork, but without the fat.
Just a note on cougar meat, we've recently had a case up here in the
Pacific Northwest where some folks got tricanosis (butchered the spelling
I'm sure) from a cougar. I believe cougar jerky was the culprit.
Cook it well boys and girls.

I think it funny b/c if you read in the Hunting and fishing rules issued by the DNR it clearly states that they are a protected animal in the state. This leads me to think that they are in the state but not in such numbers that they are often seen. Me personaly know of a resident lions out in the Francis Marion National Forest. as for the issue of why hasn't anyone shot one yet? who's to say that someone hasn't. It would be wise not to say anything especially knowing that it is illegal and doing so would be your butt. It is sort of like the black bear. We all know we have bears across the state, and the Mt. reagon has the only huntable population in the state, but I have never seen a dead bear on the side of the road along the coast at least. However, I have seen them while still hunting for deer.
THe rumor mill says that there is a corridor that black bears move along that stretches from Horry COunty to the Congaree Swamp to the upstate. I have heard that from a DNR officer, so I would consider it. There was a black bear struck and killed by a car driven by a woman I knew when I lived in Calhoun County back a few years ago. SHe was freaked out and it ruint her new Chrysler! FWIW
At least I'm housebroken.
Seems I remember reading a while back
that the largest bear recorded in the
state (or some such thing) was hit by
a car on 501 between Conway and Myrtle
Beach.

Nitz, i know that woman very well.
She sent in hair samples and it was a black bear.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
Small world ain't it? How're things down that way?

Going good man, the weather is mild, but the birds are in the area.
Hopefully this next front will do us some good.

You know there is a shitty football team called the Carolina Panthers with a black panther mascot. Typically you wouldn't name a team after something that doesn't exist locally.
I would rather hunt with Dick than ride with Ted.

Tell that to the Clemson or Conway "TIGERS"
I am sure they see atleast 28-60 wild tigers a year around roaming Pickens Tech or UCLA
Someone must have clued in the Gamecrooks- I saw some chickens at the state fair on TV once

Turd - I think more bears than people have been killed on the Conway By-Pass(22). The patrol-DPS has stopped keeping records on the bears!

trail cams, night hunters, coon hunters, still hunters, dog drivers(hunting and looking for dogs) duck hunters traveling at all hours of the night, turkey hunters calling up yotes, bobcats and other predators, and not one single confirmed eastern wild couger since the turn of the century. Everybody who spends a ton of time in the woods has seen things they can't identify, but it was not an eastern wild couger. I wholeheartedly believe people who have seen a long tailed cat in the wild, as long as it was tan and nearly 6 feet long. They should have offered it some friggin fancy feast because it was an escaped tan, 6 foot long western wild couger. Lets all face it, if an eastern wild couger or some "carolina cat" did exist in modern times, one would have turned since forever ago. If the range of an eastern wild couger is huge(I have heard 90 miles) then one would have been smoked by an overzealous shooter anywhere in this state, hit by a car, or otherwise identified by now.
