    Default Last few outings...

The kids and I fishing with their new kiddy rods at one of the local lakes, we had quite a time with the 10-12 inch bows who attacked my secret bait. Eventually the locals who were having no luck came over to see what we were using... "Oh , just some of last years Powerbait"... I kept the crickets hidden in a Starbucks cup.

Took a trip up to the Canyon with some of the guys from the ER Monday... two of them had never fly-fished and it was nice to see them land a couple trout the hard way. We fished together, one pool after another and it was an interesting experiment because we fished the same area for 4 hours and all caught fish on different flies. RS2's caught 2 fish, JuJu beatis - 3 fish, emergers -3 fish, midge nymphs- 4 fish and a fucking San Juan worm caught 6 fish. No fish on dries, streamers or really anything bigger than a 20, despite much effort.

Hit the Canyon myself this am... tough fishing, wind, rain and this sleet-snow stuff that looks like Dippin Dots. Still it was bloody packed, with inumerable 50-somethings who are more than happy to fish within 30 yards of you on a fuckin 8 mile long stretch of river... 15 yards once you start catching fish.

Luckily, I knew the SJ worm trick and was able to bring my first cutthroat trout to hand, and then 4 more... for some reason the pure cuts had been eluding me and in one day I catch 5, with no bows or browns. Trouts is crazy creatures...

Never doubt the power of the worm and always have an emergency stash of glo-bugs!

Has CO banned felt soles yet?

I've never used a San Juan worm, I guess because the guys at the fly shop ridiculed it so much. I don't usually bend under such snobbery - it's time to get me some!

Tell em to blow it out their asses. Those damn little tiny red worms rigged as a trailer are pure murder. The lead fly is nothing more than ballast.

It ain't ballast if the lead fly is a glo-bug or some other egg pattern.

Yeah, I've never seen a glo-bug so I couldn't say. I'll take your word on it. Alls I can tell you is they like the little worms. A lot.

    And crickets.

It is pretty sporty when you try to match the hatch next to a fish feeder too.

They have no idea about the crickets out here, I have to buy mine at Petco.

No felts soles banned yet, I have a felt pair but they are frozen and disinfected between streams. Waders, stick, net or anything that could get muddy gets the same treatment.

Glad you are flinging flies regularly.
    ...shit's good for the soul.

Next time you go, post some better pictures of the cutthroats.

Trap, do they have grayling out there?
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
