    Default dog's preference on bumpers

My dog seems to work better when I use the Dokken mallards then the traditional white bumpers. Does any one think this will cause a problem later on in training besides breaking my wallet. His excitement and holding of the mallards properly in mouth are excellent with the mallards, but he always cigars the white bumpers. He also doesn't seem to have a strong drive when I use the white bumpers.

I dont think there should be any problem. Put duck wings on the bumpers and see if he likes them any better.

thats what force fetching is for....

Once the dog is force fetched, if you are planning on doing it, it will learn to pick up whatever you tell him to.

So if this is pre-force fetch, it does seem like it is a huge deal.

He likes the plain white bumpers. No wings.

And he will chase a duck, now only if I can get him to swim

so does mine. First time we went to the boat ramp he jumped in and all you saw was bubbles I had to go in and get him. Ever since then he will walk around a puddle. And hates a bath.

Thanks for the info. His is forced fetch. I probably need to go back to do it again. Maybe progressed to fast. He does fine on the bumpers but he seems more enclined to retrieve a mallard.

When given the choice between prime rib and hot dogs... Im gonna chose the prime rib. That's what your dog is doing. I bought a bunch of Cabelas brand orange bumpers to do pile work with(because they were cheap). My dog would bring back every Lucky Dog bumper from the pile before she would think about grabbing one of the Cabelas. You want to talk about force to a pile... put real ducks at the over piles and bumpers in the middle.

I'm confused, if he's FF'd why the need to "do it again"? That's like being almost pregnant, either you is or you ain't.

When you say fetch, he should be kicking dirt in your face or having a panic attack to find something to put in his mouf.

If that is so, you may have to re-visit hold. This is a portion that always gets hurried through and overlooked sometimes.

Just my ..... Not worth much, but anyway.....

Basically "force fetched" is a conditioned response to the command "fetch". A dog properly force fetched will retrieve almost anything when told to do so.
