You can show restraint with a rifle just as well as you can with a bow. Just because a deer walks onto your corn pile, or past your lock on on a "game trail" on the way to your fancy "Tecomate plot", does not mean you have to shoot him/her. In either situation.

Get your head out of your ass. A dead deer is a dead deer. You arent some lord of hunting ethics just because you use a bow.

Man, I have to agree with you. I don't discriminate, and I will shoot a deer with a rifle in a heartbeat and proudly show him off and eat him with a smile, but I just don't get too excited about going to the woods with a rifle anymore. I'd rather sit with a bow and not get a shot. That might change if I have a year where I don't get any opportunities and its mid December, but I usually get enough action to keep me happy. I do, however, miss the good ol' days of dog driving. When we used to have 6500 to 10000 acres to hunt with thirty or fourty people and plenty of good beagles, a good crisp morning with several races going on and a killer lunch simmering at the clubhouse; that was hard to beat. I miss that action.

    Whitewater,

I'm with you two thousand percent. Matter of fact, I was just talking with a neighbor yesterday about the old days of dog driving. We both miss those days a lot. I enjoy still hunting, but I also miss the fellowship that came with dog driving. It's like we've lost a member of the family in the hunting world.

Upon looking back, the memories flood in with the excitement and fun I experienced in those good ol days. You simply don't get that with still hunting. The rides to the stand, the adrenaline rush as the dogs head to your stand deep in the woods, the meals and talk around the skinning shed are very much missed. The loss of dog driving is the probably the worst thing that has happened to hunting in my 52 year lifetime.

If it ever happens then we will talk about your 10 point. No one believes it will, hence the change in direction of the thread.

    Now about dog driving............

If you put another stand at the end of the plot, that's fine. I would still have the original stand there to.

Mature deer don't do the same thing everyday. He will come back by that stand soon, but the only way to kill him is to be there when he does.

he may not have a solid pattern but come the next couple of week he should develope one. I'm sure you did it but check moon, times of high tide, etc, something is there. Keep at it, you'll get him.

On another note, i never got into dog driving..But

There is nothing better than having a pile of does or a big buck jump up from in front of a horse.

You're right. That is the toughest way to shoot a deer and I love to dog hunt but I love the build up leading to a shot of any archery hunt. It's like fore play.
