    Default Tanning a gator hide

Any of you try it? What did you use and how did it turn out?

Not what you asked, but I sent mine off to American Tanning in Georgia. Did a great job.

I admire anyone for attempting it...

However, there are somethings that are best left to professionals.

go to google or yahoo and type in mississippi curing gator hide. One of the searchs will be mississippi wildlife form. where a guy named gatorman goes into detail how to do. It looks really good. I am going to try it this year. i will try to find the link and type it in.

If you don't mind sharing; how big and what was the cost?

The thing I want most from a gator is the tanned hide.

The hide I sent was 9ft and was around $325. Their website now says a 10ft hide is around $350.

Some places do it by the foot, others by the circumference around the belly.

I had a 13'6" done last year and it was $700. I could have gotten it done cheaper, but I didn't have to flesh it, which was a huge plus for a 13' gator.

    Thanks everybody,

Between the four of us in my group with tags, I may end up with 2 or 3 hides and I can't afford to pay to have all of them done so I want to try to do it myself. From reading the links you put up, it looks like a pain in the butt, but I think I will at least attempt it with the smallest and send the biggest somewhere. That's assuming we get more than one.
