    Default $2 admin fee?

got my license renewal stuff in mail from the DNR. there was an insert that said the SC General Assembly was considering a $2 admin fee added to any license purchased. It stated that the fee "would create additional revenue that could only be used for conservation law enforcement and other specific operations of the DNR."

i know sanford will veto it as a tax....and i hate to say i agree...but its one I am willing to pay. Does anyone know more about this? Why have I not heard about it? or have I and disremember?

How much revenue would this bring in?

I'd like to see it go to something like $10...

I think that you take the top 5 license purchases in the state and amortize the cost that way. I'm sure they've got the records to justify this...

Does the General Assembly set the prices or does DNR have that power?

Answer is that the general assembly will either have a way to access it or just lower the amount of state money they give DNR. The "other specific operations" part of what 2th posted scares me.

If it does, the money will be deducted from their annual budget. do they still have a budget left? You all know EXACTLY what will happen to this money

    Veto it.

    I need more explanation.

WHy would you vote against a $2 fee per license that would go to the DNR?

What is the 50million you speak of? is that a cap to the amount of money they would generate? or is that a totally different contribution?

POLITICS DOESNT ALWAYS HAVE TO BE BAD.

As I read it, the money would be for the DNR. Unless that is incorrect, I am certainly in favor of the fee.

So are you saying that there has never been money earmarked for DNR that the GA diverted for their own use elsewhere?

so, its silly for me to think that a $2 fee per license would actually go to the DNR after all?

    silly me...

Based on past history of the SC GA I would say it is, indeed, silly of you to think that. Look at the lottery. It's an education lottery right? Wrong. All they do is use the lottery money to free up some of the funds allocated for education. So actually it's a <fill in the blank with whoever got the education money that was removed BECAUSE OF the lottery> Lottery.

When Jimmy (James F.) Byrnes was governor, he championed an increase in the state sales tax from 2 cents to 3 cents per dollar. The additional revenue was to be used for public education. The sales tax is now 6 cents per dollar - plus local options! Each time the state has increased the sales tax by another penny, the additional funds were needed for...you guessed it...public education!

Does anyone believe that 4 cents of the sales tax is now devoted to public education? Only my opinion, but I believe that each time the sales tax was raised "for education," the previous increase had already been diverted to some other use. Diversion of fees and taxes by governments is by no means something new.

toofer...duck tape was saying that the $50mil in fees was, according to the senate version, going into the General budget. The house took the fees out of the budget and sent it back to dnr. Which, by the time "compromise" arrives, they will probably send the fees to the dnr but deduct the dnr budget by X(amount of projected fees) from the DNR budget.....

In other words, the dnr gets squat from the fees. More to the general budget. BUT!!!!! Maybe we can get some EARMARKS for some new dnr equipment....we just won't have the money to pay for the employees to use it.

I participated in a phone survey from DNR last Sunday. Dont remember all the Qs, but I supported paying $5 per five buck tags. If that really was, and is for the DNR, it seems reasonable to me...

I spoke with a DNR LEO this past saturday in Shem Creek. He said that there were only 3 Charleston County officers after much of the budget cut. Yes I would support any increase as long as it would go directly to DNR LEO's.
