Odd how it works sometimes. Wasnt really interested in hunting. Havent SEEN a deer in weeks. Wished i had a rifle to sneak into a stand late...but all i had was the bow. Had been cutting and splitting firewood and fat lighter most of the day. Watched my kids church basketball game (win) and decided to head to farm to watch Bama-Fl. Decided about 4:45 to hit a bow stand off the dove field where a fella saw a couple of does the night before (from rifle stand in dove field.) got in there just hoping not to bump a deer...like there are any out there. Well, smelled like pine tar and ass. got in tree. hung bow. knocked an arrow. dropped my bag to the ground. ruh-roh. should i climb down? no gloves. no facemask. no book....ugh. No decomate doe in heat buck piss fox scent. Oh well. Grabbed bow and waited...bored. saw a squirrel. thought about leaving to watch football. thought about shooting squirrel. smelled my ass mixed with kindling again. wind was whipping to 15mph. waited another minute. got even more bored. looked over and saw a deer. wow. hear another one coming in directly behind me. snuck a peak and it looks like a nice doe. getting kinda ready and doe comes rtf under the tree. cant understand how she didnt see my crap i dropped...or my dip spit. well, she comes right in front and i think about shooting her. look over and see other doe coming in. first deer is too close...8 steps. i hate that shot. i look to other doe and see more coming. i think to myself, wait on the buck. i watch a row of does about 100 yards out thru the pines. i look down at ncie nanny in front of me and say "screw it. shoot the doe." i peak at the other one under me and she is turned looking at the procession coming my way. i draw on nanny and she turns and i stick her at 15 steps. she wheels around and runs back behind me and cuts a flip. she spooks all the others and i see them right near her. look down and other deer is still under me. hmmmmm. i look over to grab quiver and another arrow. as i do, i see another deer trotting in from where my first one died. i hurry a bit and both deer are acting crazy. one runs other one off and then they both come back. i knock arrow, stand, turn and they start to get even more antsy. they still dont know i'm up there. one runs off and other starts to follow. i make some funny noise like on tv and she stops. i have to duck under a branch and i let the arrow fly. another one in the breadbasket. this deer runs straight off from me and i watch it cut a flip, too.
the second one was a button buck.
but dont let that ruin a cool story.
75lb doe
62 lb button
i dont think i've ever doubled up, even with the rifle. from first shot to second was less than a minute.
go tigers.
