I know of few hunters that can "humanely" kill a deer (or anything for that matter) at 500 yards with any kind of gun.

I've killed a lot of deer with a .243. Since most of our deer are little bitty things (200 pounds is considered "big") a well placed bullet will knock hell out of them, regardless of caliber. I have a friend of mine that shoots them in the head with a .17!
