Expanding a Refuge

The Migratory Bird Conservation Commission has granted a price approval for the purchase of land to expand the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge for the preservation and protection of migratory waterfowl.
“The Cache River National Wildlife Refuge is one of the nation’s most important areas for migratory waterfowl,” ******* said. “The corridor provides Arkansans and those visiting our state opportunities to hunt, fish, and observe wildlife. The refuge is a critical part of Arkansas’s economy and our way of life, and I’m pleased the Commission continues to expand our conservation efforts.”
Senator Blanche ******* (D-Ark) serves as one of only two Senators appointed to the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission (MBCC), which establishes new waterfowl refuges and expands existing refuges.
The proposed land tract, located in Monroe County, would expand the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in East Arkansas by 188 acres.
The area is strategically positioned in the lower Cache River/White River floodplain where thousands of acres of shallow-flooded bottomland hardwood provide important wintering habitat for migratory waterfowl. Refuge lands surround the tract on three sides, and acquisition of the tract will allow the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to restore it to its full wildlife and recreational potential, promote a large block of contiguous forestland managed for waterfowl and other migratory birds, and allow the Service to restore important hydrologic functions in the lower Cache River watershed.
The MBCC approved the Cache River NWR’s boundary in 1986 and has approved several expansions since that time. To date 48,476 acres for the refuge have been acquired using Migratory Bird Conservation Act funds. The refuge is located in Jackson, Monroe, Prairie and Woodruff Counties.
The MBCC oversees the use of Federal Duck Stamp funds, which are a vital tool for wetland conservation efforts. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, sales of Federal Duck Stamps have raised more than $700 million since 1934 to acquire more than 5.2 million acres of habitat for the National Wildlife Refuge System.
The MBCC was established on February 18, 1929 by the passage of the Migratory Bird Conservation Act. ******* has served on the Commission since 2004.
Other members include U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Chairman of the Commission; U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack; U.S. Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi; U.S. Representative John D. Dingell of Michigan; U.S. Representative Robert J. Wittman of Virginia; Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson; and A. Eric Alvarez, Chief, Division of Realty, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Secretary of the Commission.
The Elites don't fear the tall nails, government possesses both the will and the means to crush those folks. What the Elites do fear (or should fear) are the quiet men and women, with low profiles, hard hearts, long memories, and detailed target folders for action as they choose.
