I think they brought those camels to Australia back in the day for the Aussie Cavalry to use. Some got loose or were turned loose and the environment fit them so well they propagated. Now they have wild free ranging herds over there.

And I agree with you about camels being totally disgusting creatures, but how much sport would shooting a camel be? Doesn't seem like something that would be worth hunting to me. This is the first I've ever heard of anyone hunting a camel. Interesting to me
