USC STUDENTS HELPING RAISE MONEY TO SEND VETERANS TO VISIT WWII MEMORIAL IN DC

They helped saved the world from tyranny and injustice less than seven decades ago. They defended Democracy and the American Dream.

They are World War II veterans, and after all these years, they finally have a memorial in our nation’s capital.

But in the few years the WWII memorial has been open, many veterans here in South Carolina have never made the trip. One group of University of South Carolina students, however, is aiming to fix that.

The Festival Planning and Management class at USC’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management is raising $50,000 in order to sponsor and send approximately 100 of South Carolina’s WWII veterans to see the national monument in Washington, D.C. this fall.

The class of 53 students is working on behalf of Bill Dukes, chairman of the Honor Flight South Carolina program.

Dukes started the program more than two years ago. Since then, the program has sent one successful flight of approximately 90 veterans to see the memorial. Two more flights are scheduled to go this spring.

The goal is the program is to allow veterans to make the trip free of charge. Which means Honor Flight SC is working hard to gather donations to cover expenses.

So students at USC have decided to help raise funds. They would like to sponsor one full flight of nearly 100 veterans on behalf of the college — $50,000.

In addition to collecting monetary contributions, students are also holding an Honor Flight Festival on April
25. The festival will be held at 701 Whaley Street in Columbia and will include a race/walk
in the morning with live music, a silent auction, shag lessons, food and fun later in the evening.

All proceeds will go directly to the Honor Flight SC program.
