    Default this old question

    of what to plant.

I cleared about a two to three acre field as a 'hunting plot' for bow season and hogs..the piece is surrounded by pines except on one side there is a hardwood grove, with a small ditch in between the field and hardwoods.

    opinions please fellers.

might want to check your pH too while you're at it, you still have time to apply lime if you need it

I know they are going to get hammered hard but I am going to plant a small area of field peas when it gets a little warmer.

when is the time you consider "bow season"?
if i could hunt in august, i would want to hunt over sunflowers that are about to bloom.
    so id time it accordingly.
if your bow season is your entire deer season, then id plant milo in mid june, fertilize it when planting, then disk some strips (preferably the more eaten areas) of milo and plant oats or wheat/oats in early oct or late sept.
deer just seem to have gotten more shy of short grass food plots in daylight the last couple years. tall food makes em come out early. er

hey Spotin In realation to seed size, could milo be planted in a 2 row covington planter with corn plates? Not sure if Paw has different plates.

I am gonna do either milo or corn, you are dead on on the short food plots.

if cole and covington plates are interchangeable, you can borrow my milo plates.
i would think the corn plates would leave you with huge bunches of milo that have to compete too hard.

You will need a different plate for milo than the corn plate.

I would plant RR beans. Place a scarecrow every 60 yds down the field. I did that last year and made waist high beans. Pour some deer stop or liquid malathion in your roundup before spraying.

Pull the scarecrows 10 days before bow season.

You may want to look at Catjang peas. They seem to hold up better under pressure than others.

Covington milo plate is part # tp531 or tp 831. I just had to get one and a cole milo plate.
