I have an insane good Boykin Spaniel, and everytime i talk about my Boykin people say that a Boykin isnt a good dog that its just alligater bait lol. Don't get me wrong I love Labs i think there really really good dogs but i also think that if you work a Boykin it will be just as good or even better. Ive seen Boykins that beat labs in trails. i just wanted to know what yall think.

Opinions are like assholes....everyone has one...

A good dog is just that, a good dog. Breed does not matter. Tractability and desire to do the work and willingness to please his/her master are what matters.

I have a Boykin and always will. My next "prospect" will likely be a QAAxMH black lab puppy as that is the type work I'd like to do with the dog.

Fear not the naysayers amongst us, for they know not that which their tongues spew forth.

Boykins, goldens, chessies, labs...all have their place where they excel. It isn't about one being better than the other...it is about which one fits your needs best. They are different...just like there are different types of labs and different types of goldens.

I think boykins make excellent dove dogs and good small water dogs, in addition to being good gator bait

There are certainly boykins that can be much more but that is how I typify the breed.
If you don't know me how could I offend you?

they want you to be like them... which makes them about like those druids with the nose rings that you see working in the mall foodcourt.

DH143,
Don't never let anyone tell you that your little pond poodle ain't a good dog!

Seriously Candor got it right, the Boykins, along with all the other breeds have their place. If your style of hunting is better suited to a small dog then the Boykin is the one for you. They were bred, from what I've read, to be worked out of small boats in small waters and as turkey dogs. Just as the chessie was bred to work hundreds of retrieves a day in big rough waters and to guard the market hunters gear at night.

All of the Boykins I have been around were extremely high energy. They're like a cocker spaniel on meth!
