28 FT. BOAT WEIGH'S IN LARGEST BLUE!
May 26, 2008
The NC Governor’s Cup Tournament, Swansboro Rotary Bluewater, experienced an incredible tournament year when a whopping seven blue marlin were weighed in during this past Memorial Weekend’s event. The tournament uses the BIG ROCK weigh station for their billfish, and gamefish categories.
Our own board member, Richard Crowe helped monitor the radio keeping everyone “land locked” up to date on the standings. “They had some really great fishing,” commented Richard. “I think everyone with the tournament was excited to see so much action at the weigh station.”
On Saturday, the committee was notified that four blue marlin would be coming to the scales and with the not so great weather, that’s all it took for a crowd to gather.
Around 4:00 pm that day the blue marlin weigh-in’s began with Sea Spud weighing in a 503 lb. fish, Big Hunter with a 530 lb., Maggie with a 465 lb. and Gypsy Angler with a 502.5 lb.
On Sunday, two more blue’s were reported before time was called. At 4:39 pm Ramseas weighed a 546 lb. blue marlin to take a short lead until Pig Rig weighed their blue at 548 lbs.
The blue marlin excitement wasn’t over yet.
Reel Love, a 28 ft. Privateer with twin outboard Yamaha's, was still fighting their fish and at 5:00 pm notified the committee they had it in the boat. A rumored 120-inch fish had the locals waiting at the scales when they pulled in.
When weighmaster George Lott yelled out the weight at 637 lbs., the crowd went crazy! Owner Jeff Vreugdenhil was overwhelmed. With only 3 people on the boat, even getting it back was a huge task! The other two people aboard Reel Love were Jason Williford and Brad Ingalls.
So,…who says a small boat can’t win the BIG ROCK?? This fish would have won first place not only last year but many other years as well.
Congratulations to all of the winner’s and The Big Rock Tournament looks forward to seeing you in two weeks!
