Tropical Depression Forms Days Before Season Begins

    9:43 am EDT May 29, 2008

MIAMI -- A tropical depression has formed off the coast of Costa Rica days before the Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins.

"It won't be a rain maker (for Florida) today, tomorrow or this weekend, Local 6's Eric Wilson said. "But if (a ridge of high pressure) continues to be dominant as we think it will be, the system will continue into the Gulf and it reforms and becomes something we have to deal with next week."

Senior hurricane specialist James Franklin said the depression is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours as it approaches the coast of Nicaragua.

The depression was located in the Pacific, where the hurricane season started May 15.

The depression had winds of 35 mph and was moving north at 3 mph.

Forecasters said it was located 105 miles west-northwest of Cabo Blanco.

Franklin said the depression will primarily bring heavy rains rather than strong winds.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1.

Already looking pretty cloudy on the west coast of Africa. I think this is going to be a busy season. Any time the forecasters say it will be average we're in for a bumpy ride. Been nearly 20 years since Hugo cruised the coast, it's about our turn again.

I don't remember the last one that came out of the Pacific and made it into the Gulf. Interesting indeed.

It will have to cross some serious mountains there that might break it up a good bit. Ocean temps are not to the point yet that it can pick up size or speed very quickly which is good. I guess this confirms La Nina rather than my favorite Lation weather system El Nino that does not bode well.
We had better hope that the majority of the storms form in and stay on the Atlantic side this season or gas is gonna go through the roof.
I bet you $10 if it makes it into the Gulf there will be at least 1 track sending it to visit Mayor Nagin Mother Nature still ain't through douching our NOLA yet.

man could we use a good 3-5" of rain. I think it is going to be a real active season. Especially since last year was kind of dead.

Ya'll, with the pattern we are in/going towards and with the pool of warmer than normal water along the east coast, expect some landfalling storms this yr from FL to NY! The gulf ain't out of the woods either.
Might not be an above average total of storms, but storms have a better than average chance to be landfalling ones along the east coast.
