    Default The hog hunt

As related to me by Murdoch...

Gert (Trail n Tree) and crew came by the farm to chase a few hogs the other day. Murdoch took them down to one of the freshly planted duck ponds and it was ON. A hog crossed the road while they were on the way to the turnout point so Murdoch stopped the vehicles and told Gert to drop the dogs right there. About 2 minutes later the first dog barked and then they heard a roar. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of hearing a big boarhog roar, let me tell you that it is one of natures's very succinct warnings. Like the buzz of a rattler or the raised wings of a wasp. The roar plainly says "Don't fuck with me". Well, the boys hotfooted it across the pond and found the dogs surrounding a massive boar in a briar thicket. Where else?

Being crazy as shithouse rats, Gert and crew bailed in on said hog. Now imagine this picture. In fact let me show you a picture of said hog first...

That is no small sow by the way...

Anyway, imagine the scene as Murdoch described it. "They all bailed off in the thicket with the hog. Surrounding the hog was a mass of pitbulls and traildogs all trying to bite something. Gert and crew rushed in and grabbed the damn hog. Next thing I knew the hog kicked one of the boys about 10 feet up and totally out of the thicket. Looked like a cartoon only this was real. The hog charged another one of the boys and knocked him to the ground. He gathered steam for another charge and someone grabbed him by a back leg. Still snarling, roaring and popping his tusks, he was trying to get at the man on the ground. That boy was on his back scrabbling like a crab and kicking the hog in the face to keep him off while the boy held on to his back leg for dear life.

At this point Gert or one of the other lunatics began stabbing the hog with his knife. Murdoch relates that this really seemed to irritate the boar and he went to work. The boar slashed BigHead (the lead pitbull) nearly severing his shoulder from his body. He then nailed another dog and things started to really get hairy. At this point someone decided enough was enough and they shot the boar in the head. This seemed to slow him down but he still had enough in him for another charge so they shot him again."

Gert tells me that it is, indeed, one of the finest boars he has ever taken and he intends to mount it. We had seen him on the trail cams and knew he was something special. Great tusks and cutters, hell of a mane, and generally the bull of the woods.

I am happy to report that $1000 worth of vet bills later that Bighead is doing well and should be back in the game before too long. Yeah, those boys are crazy...

Nice hog. He looks like he could inflict plenty of damage.

ouch. I have seen it, heard it, and still like it. I have even had the pleasure of sewing up one of JABs mtn boys' dogs...although the dog chewed my stitches out before he got home.

I think that boar was mean but might've been easier to handle had it been run longer/harder. that's the problem with a pig that KNOWS its big. he thinks he can outfight those dogs...too bad they brought a gun!

    nice work, Gert and crew.
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.

Dog ended up with 127 stiches and 46 staples, but so far he looks as if he is feeling better. My plott ended up with a wound on her shoulder and back leg, but I think she will make a good recovery also. I will try and get some pictures up this week, but I think the hog in the picture above is the same one I caught. My buddy is still thanking my hounds for grabbing that hog when it had him on the ground. I have caught some bad boys, but I would have to say that is one of the baddest I have seen. Many always hear stories and think there it would be a blast to go, but do not realize how surreal and dangerous it is till something like this happens, and you get a reality check. I have gotten in habit of not carrying anything with me except a rope and a knife, but I guess I am going to have to start taking my pistol once again. I made three sticks on that hog, but his will to live was amazing and finally two .44 shots to the head took him down. I am going to mount that hog, one so I can hear my girlfriend bitch about it, and two so I can look at the bastard everyday and remind myself how bad I hate em. Anyway I hate what happened to the dogs, and the $1100 vet bill, but I love my dogs and could never place a monetary value on any of them, and I also know that this situation can happen anytime I turn them loose. I do know of one black bastard that will not cut them again.

I have a few dozen other trail cam shots of that one, Gert. Let me know when your mount is done and I will get some good images to go along with it.

Thanks for saving more than a few acres of corn for the ducks! Murdoch caught 5 more in the trap this afternoon and reports that the corn has sprouted and is looking stellar thanks to the dogging...

    Awesome stuff yall.

At my advanced age, I am not sure if my weak heart can stand the strain of a night hog hunt. We used to get after them about every weekend in late Jan and Feb........

Stuck a big one with a 7" bladed Randall knife one night and watched him break off the dogs and swim 3/4 of the way across the Altamaha before he gave up the oxygen habit.

The big ones are scary, but the 175-200 lbers will hurt a bunch of dogs given the chance.. they are quick.

I need to make a trip down to Glennville and go with my old cronies. They are a wild bunch !! Gert, they hate em with a passion as well. the hogs there love the Vidalia Onions and it's a full time job to keep em controlled.

Pigs like that can just hold their own and wait for the dog to attempt to re-grip their hold. When they do it's their ass most of the time.

Glad you got him out before he killed a dog or someone.
