Victor Davis Hanson has a new book out called The Dying Citizen that covers precisely that from the Greeks, Romans, etc. and puts it in context with all that is happening now. It's a very good read but it will scare you about how close we are to losing the best experiment in self-government ever on this planet.

But once it went to trial, the court said-
"Total damages for killing Annabelle are-

    a. Purchase of Annabelle: $800.00
    b. Lost income: $11, 200.00
    c. Value of Annabelle: $10,000.00
    Total Economic Damages: $22,000.00

    Punitive damages awarded were $110,000.

    Total judgement awarded is $132,000."

Except I am correct. What you fail to appreciate is that when a defendant is in default, he can’t mount a defense. He can cross examine on damages at a damages hearing IF he appears. Thus, the judge could give the plaintiff what he asked for. Thanks for setting me straight though, smart guy.

Interestingly I just noticed the judge who awarded the damages. He is a member on here and loves hunting and dogs.

    So what's your point counselor?

    Are you insinuating a bias?

And if the judge is on here, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for your ruling.

Dr. Duck-I was reflecting on my post from last night and want to apologize. I was pissed about my Tigers getting stomped in the second half and took an unnecessary and gratuitous shot at you. Of course I don’t know you and you could be the smartest guy around. But that doesn’t matter and isn’t the point. It was my bad and uncalled for. Cc

Huh? In no way. He was one of my best friends in law school. Hell of a man and going to be a great judge.
