After missing out on going last year, we were able to take our trip to Slick's this past week, and what a hell of an experience.
I believe it was Gut Pile who was the source of this donation, and we cant thank you enough. If i have that wrong, my apologies, but thanks a ton to whomever sourced this.
Slick's was an awesome place and even though the hunting was not all that great, everything else was second to none. The setting, flooded timber, lodge, guides, cooks, owner, were all super gracious and outgoing.
We hunted with Boo on the first day. Boo was referenced a few times in the original auction thread. He was a great guide and whereas the ducks didnt cooperate on day 1, it was a great learning experience to see how they go about it, call, and their overall outlook.
Day 2 - we hunted with Kevin Taylor, who is the connection to this site if i understand it. Kevin worked super hard to get us on some birds at a time where the hunting was - by their standards - really bad. That dude hustled and we appreciated it.
We didnt fire our guns on day 1, and our group of four killed 7 greenheads and a wood duck on day 2. Not great, but it didnt really diminish our overall experience.
@Feetdown - you will be happy to know that after we broke up the ice in the duck hole on day one, i stepped out of the boat and my right leg immediately filled up with water. I am not sure i have ever been colder. Your hope of me taking a tumble in the water didnt materialize, but i felt some pain after three hours in 25 degree temps with leaky waders.
If you ever get a chance to take a trip to Slick's - do what you can to go. It aint cheap - and has a long waiting list as I understand it, but it is a hell of a time.
Again - thanks to you Gutpile for lining this up. Was a trip we wont soon forget.
