    Default Samworth WMA

For the first time in many, many, many years Samworth WMA was flooded before the first season. This is progress that will benefit the resource and the public hunter.
More good news, the SCDNR board has appointed a new Director. This individual is coming from outside the agency. Hopefully the new Director will focus replacing individuals who are responsible for our waterfowl WMAs collapsing over the past 14 years.

I read a little about the new director awaiting confirmation. He in an environmental lawyer, retired JAG General. Doesnt really sound like he would care alot about the hunting aspect of DNR.

That’s the way I read it. I’m afraid we have ourselves an environmentalist preservationist combo.

    Does he hunt?

He's done the big game stuff in Africa. Gone to Texas to kill a whitetail i believe. He's close with some gator hunters in Louisiana. I'm not sure how much hunting he has done in SC.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again. They need to trash the Bachelor's requirement for those manager jobs

I don’t necessarily disagree but serious question, what would say the requirements should be? Positive past experience? How do you measure that?

The million dollar question.......is Samworth holding any ducks?

I’ve got almost 20 years experience managing land (plantations) from the coast to the midlands. I can run any piece of farm equipment and most heavy equipment with proficiency, I’ve been a part of several major wetland restoration projects and led a few. I don’t have a college degree so my resume would likely be tossed aside. 10 years ago I applied and was actually successful in getting an interview for a Tech job at Santee Coastal. They told me point blank “your experience looks great but you don’t have a degree”.

That’s thought provoking question. I just personally thinks there’s tons of people out there that have the qualifications that may not tote the education required. I can think of quite a few guys who could do it that don’t have the education, but the real world experience.

And so here’s where my question comes into play. There are plenty of people who have worked on property and know how to operate equipment and plant but there’s, as I’m sure you know, there is a lot more to managing ducks than operating equipment. Can you say that you took over a property and increased the amount of birds killed over a certain time frame by X?

If the water levels are right they should have ducks.
Reading between the line and having no first hand knowledge,it did concern me when Achi Treptow told me four weeks ago that staff was bushhogging Samworth WMAs ricefields 11 hours a day five days a week. If DNR has to bushhog white marsh this time of year it leads me to believe they did not bushhog and tiller the fields in April,May and June. Tillering during the early summer controls white marsh and promotes seed producing wet soil plants. By not tillering white marsh chokes and shades out seed producing plants.
The annual harvest numbers will tell the story. Let’s applaud DNR for flooding Samworth WMA for the first time in many, many ,many years! This is progress!

Comes down to how much money are you willing to spend and where your property is located. Don’t overcomplicate it.

The restoration of Samworth has been a laborious and expensive process. Thanks to all who helped.

    Still much to accomplish.

Facts!! That man has forgotten more about moist soil management than most of us could ever hope to learn! If there was a South Carolina Duck Hall of Fame he should be the first inductee!!

Does the new director possess a hunting license in the state of SC? Has he ever?
