Crazy. We've done a good bit of work out there. This is gonna be far-reaching for the town.

675 employees. Not the mention all the truckers, loggers, timber buyers, consultants, landowners, etc.

One of my customers as well. That really sucks. I was at Ascend in Greenwood yesterday while their CEO was going around letting them know their plant will be closing in December as well. I believe those guys will be out of a job also come February.

The current administration has put so many regulations on industry that they can’t afford to do business in the United States. It is quite sickening.

Hate to hear Gtown shutting down. The paper and saw mills have taken a terrible beating here lately.

Not to mention their vendors and subs. United Rentals alone probably does well over a million a year out there.

If we cant grow trees for a profit, what shall we grow? High density cheap houses I guess. Makes me sad.

Its definitely interesting to see what is happening in the wood markets right now. on a macro scale, South America is constructing something like 1 new pulp mill every couple of years and has been for a while now. They are starting to dominate the global pulp industry, which has been shrinking over the last couple decades, the only sector that is growing/maintaining in pulp is corrugated box production. If there is a paper producing mill in the SE, it is eventually going to shut down, IMO.

The downfall of this market has been a long time coming. Anyone who has been watching all this for the last 20 years shouldn't be surprised. I think we have finally just hit a tipping point in the southeastern US in regard to profitability.

Now, here is where I get frustrated. IP is a big boy player in the state and southeast in regard to timberland. They have a lot of sway and power. Everyone knows the demise of pulpwood has been coming (for at least the last decade). Yet, the SC Forestry Association has done little, if anything, to prepare for it by recruiting potential new players/industry, such as this bulk materials port that everyone is now trying to make happen.

Why wasn't that process started 10 years ago? - Because that would have led to groups like IP having more competition and less profitability and they weren't going to allow that to happen. So instead, they let these big boys like IP get while the gettin's good, only to walk away when the dance is over.

IP will keep on keepin on, while South Carolina is left to pick up the pieces...

I don't know much about paper and logging, but I always enjoyed playing in the IP Classic baseball tournament when I was in High School. It used to be a big deal for your team to get invited to that (not sure if that's still the case).

There’s never a good time for one of these closures but due to the previous mill shutdowns over past years there isn’t enough outlets to filter the wood. This one is going to sting harder. This fucking sucks
