Well after doing some loose research for the past couple weeks on localish breeders, litters, planned litters, I'm starting to come to the conclusion that it might be cheaper finishing my Limited Late Model build.

Seeing lots of puppy prices over the 2k range, which seems a bit crazy to me.

Seems like the going rate for a started dog around my parts ranges from 5k to 7k.

Just has me thinking it would be good money spent to try to save for the started dog option??

Still waiting on that PepperJack Kennel sponsorship to come through...lol

You get what you pay for.

Anyone selling a well bred, healthy, good puppy for less than 2k is not making much money. Cost of all the health and genetic testing, the cost of years of training boarding and owning the bitch and the sire, stud fees, the cost of puppy whelping and care for 8weeks, the cost of food, the cost of multiple visits for a litter, the cost of the breeders time to market and deal with buyers, the list goes on and on. I had a litter of 8 recently. I added it all up in the end; I had almost 6k in "hard" and "soft" costs.

Of course you could find a cheaper one and that puppy dang well could turn out to be a healthy and well mannered dog, but its a gamble you've got to decide for yourself.

If you want to stack the cards in your favor in the long run for a healthy well bred dog, spend the money up front, it will be by far the least expensive expense in the lifetime of the dog.

I see what you are saying but you can't expect to recoup a lifetime of expenses of the bitch/sire off of one litter of puppies. You can absolutely find a well bred labrador puppy for under $2k. There is several on HLP right now. They don't bring in what the high end golden/boykin litters do because of the market constantly being flooded by sheer volume.
