Three schools in Mount Pleasant have been locked down and police have cordoned off a nearby apartment complex after reports of a man inside the apartments with a gun.

Police Chief Harry Sewell says a man moving out of the apartments Tuesday morning reported seeing another man enter the complex with a gun.

Sewell says the lockdown is a precaution. He says police do not think that anyone is in danger at the schools, which are some distance away.

Sewell says police have not had any contact with the man reportedly seen with the gun.

He says police don't know if shots have been fired.

I am surprised I never had the cops called on me for carrying all my shotguns and rifles back and forth into my old apartment that I lived in right after college.

Never had anything stole though. Guess I made a point without ever knowing it.

The incident began about 10 a.m. when a man at the Southampton Apartments called 911 to report a man with a gun entering the complex, Mount Pleasant Police Chief Harry Sewell said.

The schools, which are several blocks from the 240-unit apartment complex in this Charleston suburb, were put on lockdown as a precautionary measure, Sewell said.

"We did tell the schools to be on lockdown just for security reasons," he said. "We have no reason to believe anybody is in danger."

Police had not had contact with the man reportedly toting the gun, Sewell said. The chief also said authorities did not know if any shots had been fired, although the man who reported seeing the gun also said he thought he heard a gunshot.

"We're trying to figure out what's going on," Sewell said. "We don't know really what we have. We're going to take it slow and methodical."

I sure am glad my apartment is nowhere near a school. My roomate and I would be public enemies #1 and #2. I know I've been spotted on more than one occasion hauling a rifle, shotgun, and bow into my apartment. I know the police are just doing thier job, and they will come out and say that you can never be too careful, but, damn....

The same guy has been spotted numerous times leaving the apartment complex at 3:00 am, often with what appears to be a floating island of sorts hitched to the rear of his truck.This is the same truck that is often covered in mud. And get this, they have even observed some sort of tree climbing device in the bed of said truck.

Good riddance. I was kicked out of sensitivity training on suicide once while in the Navy. I was proud of me. Don't get me wrong, I know it's rough on the families, but the world is a better place for it. Talked to guy in class tonight and this was apparently right beside his condo. The guy actually came in his condo. They have put him up in a hotel tonight while they sort through everything.
