I can help clarify. Every year during the SC sporting clays championship we have a grudge match with NC. 5 people on each team. Shooting some incredibly difficult targets in a shootoff for the crowd. South Carolina has won it 4 of the 5 of the 5 years we have been doing it. This year was no different. We beat them again by a large margin.

Sorry for lack of detail. I know at least one of these in the picture are members here. I ripped this from FB. Please accept my apology

Well done fellas.... I brought Jane up Saturday morning to shoot the main event. This was her first nsca event, she was second overall in D class and first in-state D class.
She did well, dropped some targets she definitely should not have and showed out on some big ones. She had a good time and came home with a few hundred dollars and a trophy!

That’s awesome! Congratulations to her, well done!

It’s fun to watch the youth shooters engage in these events. We stay more on the NSSA side and lightly dabble in NSCA, it’s been a great experience for my son along with most everyone being welcoming to the youth.

You guys that have been shooting competitively in the circuit for a long time I have a question for you. Is there literature that you would recommend I could Point Jane to to help her develop and maintain mental clarity? She dropped nine Targets on two stations Sunday morning and it wasn't that they are challenging targets. For the most part they were Target she should have pillowcased! Pulled it back together after that and obviously finished well but over and over that is what I see. She misses targets that she never should have and it's always a lapse and mental clarity and focus!

There are literally books written about the mental game in sports. For sporting clays Lanny Basham put out some good information years ago. In reality, if your fundamentals are lacking it will appear that your mental game is the culprit when misses creep in. When tournament pressure hits the first thing to take a hit is flaws in the fundamentals. Good foot position, moving the gun thru the body, seeing the targets well. Then even when everything is solid, misses creep in when anxiety hits. Anxiety will affect your visual acuity, creates more conscious thought and makes you tight and careful. You really have to put yourself under pressure situations a lot to help you understand the telltale signs of anxiety. We become outcome focused rather than process focused. Over time you learn to avoid those pitfalls and power through it.

What Gander said plus: 1) A consistent pre-shot routine, 2) Quiet Eye - force yourself to let your eyes settle and relax for at least 3 seconds prior to calling for the target, and 3) shoot a train car full of shells.

I’ve seen pro golfers prepare for playing under pressure by sprinting 20 ft or so and back to the ball for practicing w elevated heart rate.
